A few weeks ago I shared my thoughts on what the glamping landscape might look like when the Covid-19 lockdown finally comes to an end (check it out here), and with a huge rise in demand expected to hit the UK staycation market, how can you quickly increase capacity to take advantage of this?
Back in March the Guardian had already reported that the travel industry had seen a drop in demand for overseas flights as worries about coronavirus began to take hold.
A more recent article in The Telegraph further echoed my thoughts, stating that we are likely to see a huge rise in demand for car-based holidays, making it likely that staycations will be more popular than ever.
So what does this mean for owners of glamping sites here in the UK? No one can say when the current rules will be relaxed enough to allow for new bookings to be taken with confidence, and speculating as to when this could happen isn’t helpful, but it is very likely that in the near future, demand for self-catering and glamping holidays will be higher than ever.
Increasing Your Glamping Site Capacity
Of course on your existing site, you’ll have a finite amount of space available for glamping accommodations, but even the smallest of sites is likely to have the space to squeeze in an extra bell tent or two. More accommodation options mean you can take more bookings and maximise revenue when lockdown finally comes to an end.
You might have a tipi or yurt only site, or perhaps all of your glamping accommodations are shepherd huts or pods, so whilst the purchase of new accommodation to fit in with what’s already on site is unlikely to be feasible, there are more inexpensive options you could consider.
Bell tents are relatively inexpensive to buy – £450 can get you a decent 5m bell tent – and you don’t need much space at all in order to site it. Kitting a bell tent out inside too can be done fairly cheaply depending on the level of comfort you want to provide, but don’t forget, even a basically furnished bell tent sited somewhere pretty on a site with good facilities, can still earn you upwards of £70 per night.
Of course, you still want to ensure that existing accommodation retains as much privacy as possible, but the compact footprint of a bell tent and the relatively low investment, means they can provide the ideal way, not only to add an extra an accommodation choice, but to quickly and easily increase capacity at your glamping site.
The only real consideration you’ll need is the facilities you have on-site. For example, if your existing accommodation is all en suite, if you are thinking of adding bell tent glamping as an option, you’ll need to factor in the need for a toilet(s) and running water, but for sites that already have these facilities, adding a couple of extra bell tents will be quick, easy and relatively inexpensive to implement.
